What you will need:

Here’s everything you need to make this tasty sweet chilli tofu:

  • Soy sauce, salt and pepper
  • Chilli flakes / red pepper flakes (US)
  • Pointed red pepper – also known as Red Romano Chile or Ramiro pepper.
  • Sugar

  1. Add more vegetable oil to the hot pan if necessary. Fry the sliced red pepper for two minutes on medium-high heat, stirring frequently.
  2. Reduce heat to medium and add sesame oil (if using), the white/yellow part of the spring onions, garlic and chilli flakes. Saute for 1 minute while stirring.
  3. Add the water, vinegar, sugar and stock powder. Bring to a gentle simmer and stir to dissolve the sugar.
  4. Stir together cornstarch and water to make a slurry. Stir the slurry into the sauce, and keep stirring gently until the sauce thickens up. Remove from heat or keep warm covered on very low heat until ready to serve.
  5. When ready to serve, place the fried tofu back in the pan with the sauce. Sprinkle in chopped spring onion greens and stir to coat the tofu in sauce.Serve on noodles, rice, or another side of your choice.

Sweet Chili Tofu Variations and Add-Ons:

Throw in some extra vegetables like carrots, green beans, mushrooms and extra peppers, to bulk up the dish or even replace the tofu. Chop them into chunks and fry them with the sliced pepper.

To make our sweet stew tofu gluten free, use tamari rather than soy sauce to prepare the tofu. Additionally, assuming you serve it with noodles, use gluten free noodles or basically present with rice.

Apple cider vinegar can be easily replaced with rice vinegar or lemon juice.

Sweet Chili Tofu Recipe Notes:

The heat level of chilli flakes (called red pepper flakes in the US) in the varies widely, depending on which type chilli pepper they are made from. For us, mild to medium chilli flakes are perfect for this recipe, as they provide a lot of pepper flavour while keeping the heat kick to a tolerable level.

Sweet Chili Sauce can often be found in the Asian or international section of the grocery store, or it can be purchased online. This sauce is quite unique and there is no substitution for it.
